A few months back, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kayla Mickelsen of Nashville-based, bedroom-pop duo Personal Trainer. Kayla and bandmate George Seay are extremely hardworking and talented individuals, coming together and beginning to make music together starting their freshman year of college at Belmont University nearly five years ago. Signed with Nashville’s Acrophase Records, co-founded by band member George, they work with the team there to create songs and visuals as full-projects. The duo released their debut EP, Tape 1.1, in October of 2020. It’s a six-song collection that I really enjoyed. Seriously, every song is a banger so make sure to give it a listen. The name Personal Trainer comes from the duo’s love of fitness as well as bringing groovy and 80’s-workout-hype-but-chill type vibes to each of their songs. Personal Trainer also has a very distinct persona through their visuals – flashing a bold, bubble-gum ambiance. I can’t wait to see what Personal Trainer releases next, but I know that this duo and their team will put their creative, forward-thinking minds to the test and create something wonderful.
